Rummy FAQ: How Can You Tell a Plan Is Becoming Expensive?

A plan is becoming expensive when its cost rises faster than its useful progress. Cost is not limited to points. It can include turns spent waiting, cards that become exposed, options you give up, and attention consumed by constant rebuilding.

Track progress in concrete terms. Has the plan completed a legal group, reduced the number of isolated cards, or opened a realistic second route? If the answer remains no after several meaningful turns, compare the position with your fallback. A plan that looks unchanged may still be valuable if it reduced risk, but you should be able to name that benefit.

Watch for narrowing language. “I need this exact card,” “one more turn will fix it,” and “the earlier cards must appear soon” are signs that the route may be relying on hope. Replace them with a count of practical outs and a deadline. The count does not need to be perfect; it needs to make your assumption visible.

Also inspect the opportunity cost. What safer move are you declining while you wait? If keeping one card prevents you from reducing a high-value loose card, the waiting cost may be significant. If the alternative also has a narrow route, the comparison should be explicit rather than emotional.

When the cost becomes too high, name the exit reason and switch. The switch may not produce an immediate improvement, but it can stop further damage. Review the plan afterward by asking whether the cost was visible earlier and whether a predefined deadline would have helped. This keeps a difficult result from becoming a vague lesson.

Cost can also appear as mental friction. If you repeatedly revisit the same cards, lose track of the discard pile, or feel unable to choose between plans, the position may be consuming too much attention. Simplify the hand into one main route, one fallback, and one card to release first. Clarity is a legitimate improvement even when the score does not change immediately.

Do not use the word expensive to mean unsuccessful. A sound plan can fail because the needed card did not arrive. The useful question is whether the plan was reasonably priced when chosen and whether you noticed when that price changed.
