Rummy How-To: Make a Three-Card Contingency Plan

A contingency plan is not a prediction about the next card. It is a short list of responses for different kinds of information. Making one before the draw reduces the chance that disappointment will force a rushed decision.

Choose three cards or card categories that represent the likely outcomes of the next turn. The first can be a direct improvement that completes or strongly advances your preferred group. The second can be a useful alternative that supports a backup route. The third can be a neutral or unhelpful result that tells you to reduce risk or remove a costly card.

For each category, name one action and one reason. For example: “If a direct connector appears, keep the sequence and release the isolated high card. If a low-card alternative appears, compare it with the current bridge. If neither appears, discard the card with the fewest credible jobs.” Keep the wording short enough to remember while looking at the hand.

Do not prepare a response for every exact card. Exact-card planning feels precise but often creates too many branches. Categories are more robust because they survive small changes in the hand. You can refine the action after the card arrives, but the contingency plan gives you a starting point.

Include an exit condition. If the preferred route requires another specific card after the next turn, decide when you will stop investing in it. Without an exit condition, a near miss can keep the route alive longer than its evidence supports. The condition might be a number of turns, a penalty threshold, or the disappearance of a supporting card.

After acting, compare the result with the plan. Did the category fit the card? Was the action still legal and sensible in the new layout? If you ignored the plan, determine whether new information justified the change or whether emotion took over. Contingency planning is successful when it creates flexible discipline, not when it prevents adaptation.

Keep the contingency plan private and practical. It is not a promise that you must follow a branch even when the hand changes. If a rule detail, table event, or new piece of information makes the planned action invalid, stop and rebuild the plan. The value lies in reducing surprise and emotional overreaction, while still allowing a legitimate update. Over time, you will recognize which categories cover most of your difficult turns and reduce hesitation later today.
